Under Gordianus Pius (fig. 3/6)2, though still youthful, he approxi-
mates more closely to the normal
aspect of Zeus ; for, while raising his
right hand, he holds a thunderbolt
°n his left arm and sometimes has an
eagle at his feet3 or else is crowned
by Nike standing on a column behind
him. On bronze pieces issued c. 250—

a mature man half-draped in a

himdtion and uplifting a wreath. On

°ther bronze pieces struck in s. ii or

1 B'c- (fig- 378)5 a laureate head with

a bushy beard is aptly described by

Sir G. F. Hill as 1 Zeus, that is to say

^arnas.'6

The same god is represented on

a colossal scale by a figure found
