It thus appears that the real culprits, the man that first struck the

p. 514 n. 2 justly remarks that d<pel8r) must here mean 'was acquitted' because a
lines before, in the clause irpiv 1) Qyo-ebs dtpelBi], Pausanias had used the same wo
that sense. B. Tamaro also in the Annitario della r. scuola di Atene e dells Wt
italiane in oriente 1921—1922 iv.—v. 5 (cp. id. 'La Bouphonia' in the Cronaca
Belle Arti 1920 p. rof.) accepts that meaning. Even H. von Prott, who holds t'iatwaS
axe was really cast out of the country, does not deny that Pausanias meant ' the axe
acquitted' and is reduced to supposing that he must have misunderstood his au ^
{Rhein. Mus. 1897 Hi. 194 n. 1). L. Deubner Attische Feste Berlin 1932 p. 159 tt _ej
admitting that von Prott's solution is possible, inclines to adopt an emendation prol ^ g
by E. Pottier in Daremberg—Saglio Diet. Ant. ii. 270 n. 24 and printed in the ^.^gp
certainty by H. Hitzig acpdStj <es Bd\a<x<rav> (cp. Paus. 1. 3. 1 d^ieis 0ij<reis " ^° ;nt
Sjc/poi/a). But this expedient confuses the axe with the knife and misses the whole p

mean that the bystanders did not know where the doer of the deed was to be fou°

Hi. 198 insists, ' not knowing the man that had done the deed.' Probably Momrnset ^
