Hadrian to that of of Geta (figs. 374, 375)1 he is a youthful hunter.
Under Gordianus Pius (fig. 376)2, though still youthful, he approxi-
mates more closely to the normal
aspect of Zeus ; for, while raising his
right hand, he holds a thunderbolt
on his left arm and sometimes has an
eagle at his feet3 or else is crowned
by Nike standing on a column behind
him. On bronze pieces issued c. 250—
—i$o B.C. (fig. 377)4 he appears as

a mature man half-draped in a

himdtion and uplifting a wreath. On

other bronze pieces struck in s. ii or

i B.C. (fig. 378)5 a laureate head with

a bushy beard is aptly described by

Sir G. F. Hill as ' Zeus, that is to say

Marnas.'6

The same god is represented on

a colossal scale by a figure found

near Gaza in 1879 and now in the M E «

Imperial Museum at Constantinople

Tell el Ajoul (' Hill of the Calf) on

the left side of the Wadi Gazze,

some two hours to the south-west of % E £

Gaza, Arab masons had dug up \|E

certain well-cut blocks of stone and

sold them in the town. Prospecting
