cording to his desire, and had it translated and co^
pied fair, "ready to he sent to-morrow morning. This
is the anniversary of my leaving Calcutta, and a
pretty twelve months' employment I have had of
it. At night the inhabitants began to hoist lights
on long bamboos, erected before their houses,
preparatory to the celebration of the candle-feast.

September 16. In the morning I sent Mr. Keys
to the mayhoon's with the letter I had prepared
yesterday. He read it over twice with great atten-
tion, shook his head, and said, notwithstanding all
the pains he had taken yesterday, the letter con-
tained precisely my former sentiments, only ex-
pressed in fewer Avoids. I had instructed Mr.
Keys to explain or enforce particular points as
opportunity might offer, but his excellency was
so much absorbed in thought and apparently dis-
appointed that he hardly listened to any thing he
said, or smiled the whole time. After a short
stay, Mr. Keys retired, it being his excellency's
breakfast hour.

September 17. About two p.m., I received a let-
ter from the inayhoon, in which he acknowledges
the receipt of mine. Complains that the. articles
in it are too long for present consideration, and ad-
vises me to go to the looto, receive the commission
which his majesty has been graciously pleased to
grant me, take the oath of allegiance, and go to
Rangoon; adding, that when I had remained
