THE MASTABA OF PTAHHETEr AND AKIIETIIETEP

of the Bee," or "of the Bee-King (?)"; in late
times it was reduced to hb't, and so commonly
spelt out (Sethe, A. Z., 181)2, 114). See also
Piehl, A. Z., 181)8, 85. The only point still
doubtful is whether (y)by't—as Max Miiller
preferred—or byt is to be read, by'ty is King
of Lower Egypt; pi. byt'yio. In Pap. Harr. i.
there is a class of people, perhaps those who
collected gum from the trees, named by'ty (?).
The basse-epoque use of the bee as word-sign
for k3% "work" (Br., Wfb. Suppl, 1231) is
interesting.

W dung-beetle (Scarabaeus sacer); black in
Pth, : fig. 155, Pth., xxxvi. 3. The animal,
though inconspicuous in itself, is very notice-
able for its habits. Name hvrr (Pyr. W., 4:4,1 -
N., 747). Word-sign for hpr, by the usual loss
of the doubled consonant.

d (Hie,:, p. 25); bivalve shell: fig. 150,
Pth., xli. 15; fig. 159, Ahht. Compare the
shell hung round the neck of the ox, amongst
the miscellaneous details, PI, xvi.A top right.

Class VII. Vegetation. Pl. X.

-=$=> four-petalled flower, open: fig. 187,
Ahht. Word-sign for wn, "to open." Phon.
for ion, most frequently so used in O.K.; later
almost confined to -=$=■ Q7\ wm, " eat," where it

gradually changed its form to &,^ (q.v. I Her.,
p. 37).

o fig. 167, Pth., xli. 2. Det. of d% "fig,"
whether Ficus carica or Ficus sycamorus.

(Ilier., p. 26); pod of carob bean : fig. 181,
AIM. (green). Word-sign for ^ ^ ^ "sweet,"
"pleasant"; whether this value is due to the
" sweetness" of the pod, or to the tree itself
being called ss-nzm, in late times ntm, is not
clear.

grains of corn; fig. 171, Pth., xli. 14.
Word-sign for yt, "barley" (Pyr. M., 20 -
N., 119, &c. In early times det. of corn, after-
wards superseded by ,0 .

Stand with grain : fig. 177, Pth., xli.,
offerings 24. Det. of />h\ probably a grain used
in beer-making.

© (Flier., p. 27); threshing-floor
''///., xxxiii. 5.

fig. 190,

(the flower (?) W, Eier., p. 26, is a form of
it) root(?): fig. 184, Pth., xli. 19. Word-
sign for bn(r), "sweet," "date," &c. : possibly a
sweet root such as beet-root (I let a).

Bunch of onions on a basket: fig. 175, Pth.,
xli. 19. Det. of hz'w, "onions."

•o^- (Ilier., p. 26); trimmed branch or tree-
stem : fig. 179, Pth., xxxix., col. 8; fig. 168,
Ahht. (only one instance of this form in the
tomb).

tree : fig. 188, Pth., xli. 16 ; fig. 191, ib.,
10. (In the first instance the name is nbs, in
the second ysd.) Det. of trees. Word-sign for
1 \ !k " pleasant," " graceful," and a kind of
tree so called, with rad. ext. and phon. trans.
In Pyr., det. of qb, " refreshing."

"T

tree on sacred perch : fig. 178, Ahht.
Nome-sign, perhaps the same as the next.

The same, with ill-defined appendage, which
in the best instances in Ahht. resemble a
human arm and hand holding () : fig. 174,
Pth., xxxv. 2, no. 3; figs. 186, 192, Ahht.
There are cases in which the appendage looks
like a flower on a curved stem. Nome-siim,
probably for XXth and XXIst nomes of Upper
Egypt.
