This remains Lhe standard biography of Granach. It is based on the
study of documents, many of which are printed in extenso, and contains
a collection of materials of the utmost value to any future biographer.
The catalogue of Cranach’s works, especially of the paintings, needs
much revision.

The biographer’s aim is to present Cranach « als ganzen Menschen,
nicht bloss als Kiinstler ». He therefore includes in his book much of the
history of the Reformation period.

(4) An account of the tournament of Nov. 15-16, 1508, the subject of three
