ijaiuts tglrr ttas tu’rlj rtn tgrl fttts. Single border. Coarse work,
without hatching.

[151 x 203.] Colours : light brown, yellow, green. No •watermark. Well
preserved, except tbat a narrow strip bas been torn ofF and restored on tbe r. side.
Some letters of tbe inscription bave been restored witli ink.

Part of tbe colleetion of book-plates (“ ex-libris ”) bequeatbed by Sir A. Wollaston
Franks, K.C.B., in 1897. On tbe back are tbe initials J. M. Tbis is one of
tbe two impressions mentioned by Scbr. as being in tbe possession of Mr. L. Pinsentbal,
at Municb. Tbe other, coloured in a similar, but not identical, way, bas been repro-
duced by F. Warnecke, “ Die deutschen Biicherzeichen,” Berlin, 1890, Tafel i. (see tbe
text, pp. 10, 11). It is attacbed to tbe cover of an undated quarto book, “ Vocabularius
incipiens | teutouicu ante latinu,” printed by Peter Dracb, at Spires (1482 ?). (Proctor
2360.) The book, wbicb belonged in 1791 to P. Amandus Euepp, contains three
inscriptions in tbe band of the original owner (facsimiles, Warnecke, p. 11), from wbicb
it appears tbat his real name was Jobannes Knabensperg, and tbat be was chaplain to
tbe Schonstett family. Igler appears to bave been a nickname, and the motto, “ Das
dicb ein igel kus,” must bave been some jocular expression, now obsolete, wbicb
Warnecke compares with tbe still current saying, “ Dass dich das Mauslein beiss.” Tbis
is probably tbe earliest extant example of a book-plate, thougli the date, about 1450,
proposed by Warnecke, is most likely too early. Schr. suggests 1470-80. Four
impressions of this woodcut bave been described. Tbe above is kept among tbe Franks
collection of book-plates. Kepr., Warnecke, op. cit., Taf. i. L. Eosentbal, Katalog 90,
p. 25, no. 103. Hirtb u. Muther, “ Meister-Holzschnitte,” Taf. 13.

f BOOK-PLATE OF HANS IGLEE.

(Keproduction.)

Scbr. 2036; Warn. 931.

Collotype reproduction of the above from F. Warnecke, “ Die deutscben Biicber-
zeicben,” 1890, Taf. i.

A 136.

BOOK-PLATE OF WILHELM VON ZELL.

Scbr. 2037; Warn. 2549.

Two shields, surrounded by a single thick border :

1. An arm embowed in armour issuing from the dexter fess point,

the hand grasping a sword. Crest, an arm embowed as in
the arms, the hand grasping a sword point downwards.

2. Three piles issuing from the base. Crest, a demi stag.

[85 x 77.] Not coloured, sligbtly cut at tbe top (tbe dimensions given are tbose of
a second, more perfect, impression in tbe Franks collection). No watermark.

Duplicate from the Franks collection of “ ex-libris,” bequeatbed 1897. Kepr.,
Warnecke, op. cit., p. 9 ; L. Eosentbal, Katalog 90, p. 25, no. 106; Mutber, “ Die deutscbe
Biicherillustration,” i, 267.

Tbe otber impression in tbe collection is attached to tlie lly-leaf of a book from tbe
Cartbusian Monastery of Buxbeim—sold, witli tbe rest of tbe mouastic library, at
Municb, in 1883—on whioh is an inscriptiou, in tbe same band as tbat reproduced by
Warnecke, stating tbat the book, “Undecima et ultima pars operuin beati Augustini,”
was presented to tbe monastery “ a nobili domicello Wilhehno de Zcll.” Zell, a member,
according to Warnecke, of tbe family of Zeller, of Kaltenberg, is mentioned in a
document of 1479, and it is assumed by AVarnecke and Scbreiber tbat tbe book-plate
was executed not mucb later tban tbis. Some doubt may be tbrown on tbis by tbe
existence of tbe following iuscriptiou, placed under an impression of tbe book-plate,
a tracing of whicb is in tlie Franks collection, in tlie first edition of the Missale
Cartbusiense : Missale illud comparauit Garthusiensibus in Buchszheim Nobilis |
domicellus Wilhelmus de Zell vtendum in altare Beatissime Anne | In capella domini
Hilprandi. Oret’ itaque per (sic!) eo et p. quibus petijt. | A nno 1519. If tbis inscription,
wbich is not by tbe same band as tbe otber, was writteu at the timeof tbe presentation,
it tends to sbow tbat tbe book-plate is of a inuck later date tban bad been supposed.
