GOPIES OF THE APOCALYPSE.
A.—By ITieroxymus Greff. Strassburg, 1502.
H. 1657, etc.
11 ieronymus Grcft', “ Maler,” of Frankfort, becamc a citizen of Strassburg in 1502. He
raarried Agnes Hirtz, and is heard of once again in 1507.1 The copies of the Apocalypsc
are his only known work. They appearcd, like the ol'iginal, in two editions, witli
Latin and Gerrnan text. No complete copy of the Latin edition is known, and of thc
German edition one copy only in book-form, at Munich (reproduced 1894, with intro-
duction by Prof. Sepp; thc “ facsimiles ” in this edition arc without GreiFs monogram).
Both editions are printed with the type of Johann Priiss the elder.
The verso of the last leaf is blank in all editions, as the colophon oecurs on the
vcrso of leaf 15. Schorn (Kunstblatt, 1830, no. 24, p. 96) describes early impressions of
these copies without text at the back or uumbers at the top on the r. side; on thesc
impressions the references to chapters are printed from woodblocks. The monogram
which stands on every leaf is undoubtedly to be read as I V F (Iheronymus von
Franckfurt), not as M F or I M F. The copies are fairly accurate, and might be called
deceptive but for the monogram.
