mark, Ha. 20. Tke skeet is clean and well preserved, kut cut elose to tke limits of
tke text, and wkat was originally tke r. kalf of tke broadside lras kere again been out
off and attacked to tke bottom of tke 1. kalf.
Diirer’s monogram is placed at tke bottom of tke verses, but not on tke woodcut
itself, wkick is dated 1510. Tkere are quite late impressions of tke cut alone without
text, but no later edition of tke broadside as a wkole kas been described, as in tke case
of tke otker two.
Tkero are very fine impressions of tkis and tke preceding cut (B. i 32) in tke first
state in tke Stuttgart collection.
Collections : Nagler (F. 524, blue), Berlin Cabinet_(duplicate, F. 329), Mitchell.
Presented by W. Mitchell, Esq., 1895.
100. THE PENITENT. 1510. B. 119. H. 1860. R. 168.
[193 x 130.] A good impression, but restored in tke 1. upper corner, where a large
piece, including tke monogram and date, kas been lost and replaced by a copy drawn
in Indian ink. Tkere is anotker small restoration below tlie handle of tke scourge. No
margin or watermark
Presented by W. Mitckell, Esq., 1895.
Tke sirbject remains unexplained. A pen-and-bistre drawing of tke kneeling figure
is in tke British Museum (Lippmann 237), but its autkenticity is not entirely above
suspicion. It is in tke same direction as tke woodcut, and agrees witk the latter very
closely, but the drapery is not so well drawn, and tke action of tke 1. kand is slightly
different. Tkere are two small independent sketcbes on the same slreet.
101. ARMS OF MICHEL BEHAIM. 1511 (or earlier).
B. 159. H. 1937. R, 128.
[283 x 193.] Good impression, witkout margin. Watermark, a large single-
keaded eagle, not in Ha.
Presented by W. Mitckell, Esq., 1S95.
The attribution of tkis unsigned cut to Diirer is warranted by tlie artist’s letter to
Bekaim on tlie back of tke block, wkick was discovered by v. Murr, in tke xviii century,
in tke arckives of tke Bekaim family. Tke block is still in good preservation, and tke
letter, tkougk faded and partly effaced, is still legible (see F. Fuhse, “ Diirer. Kleine
Mitteilungen,” Mitt. a. cl. Germ. Nationalmuseum, Niirnberg, 1895, 9, witk a facsimile
of Diirer’s letter in collotype, Taf. i). Tke transcript of tke text (after v. Murr) in Lange
and Fukse, “ Diirer’s Schriftlicher Nachlass,” p. 59, is inaccurate. The editors rigktly
remark tkat tke letter is important as proving tkat Diirer only drew the design on
tke block and did not cut it kimself. He sent tke block witk tlie drawing on it to
kis patron, wko apparently kad to get it cut for liimself. Diirer declined to make
certain alterations in tlre arrangement of tke foliage wkicli Behaim kad desired, on tke
ground that tke coil of stuff on the kelm, on wkick tke eagle stands, would tken be
kidden by tke leaves. Tke year in wkick tke commission was given to Diirer cannot
be ascertained, but Mickel Bekaim died on 24 Oct. 1511.
