1670, 1890. Por woodcuts by him, after Springinklee and Beham,
see pp. 384, 400, 401, 492. He was also employed in cutting the
blocks of the Triumphal Procession of Maximilian. Tliree poems by
Hans Sachs, printed by him, in the library, contain interesting
woodcnts, viz.: “ All Romisch Keiser nach Ordnung,” 1530 ; Klagred
der Welt ob yhrem verderben,” 1531; and “ Nachred das grewlich
laster,” n.d. (1530-31). P. 4 is in the collection of King Frederick
Augustus II at Dresden. 1537, on a portrait of Luther and his
wife, at Gotha, is the latest date connected with Rescli. Gotha also
has portraits of George the Bearded and Ulrich of Wiirtemberg, and
a giraffe, dated 1529, with Resch’s name.
11. ILLUSTRATION TO A POEM BY HANS SAOHS, THE SEVEN HIND-
RANCES OF A SEEKER AFTER CHRIST.
On mount Sinai 1. Moses is receiving the tables of the Law ; lower
down the hill Moses, surroundecl by a group of pilgrims laden with the
burden of their sins, points to the Law. The pilgrims set out on their
journey, first climbing a fence. They are detained by thorns and logs,
and attacked by wild beasts in a wood. In the background they are
sleeping, with David, two prophets, John the Baptist and St. Paul
arousing them and pointing the way to the opposite hill, mount Zion, on
which Christ is seen as Man of Sorrows treading the wine-press, and
again as the risen Saviour. On the summit of the hill is the Lamb.
[215 x 375.] A late impression. Watermark, two escutcheons with a mitre and
crozier.
In the inventory of 1837.
An early, coloured impression at Berlin has the heading, “ Sibnerley Anstoss der
Welt so dem menschen der Christum suchet begegnen.” Under the woodcut is a long
poem signed H.S.S. Then follows, “ Johan Behem Prediger zu Beyreut. Die pfort ist
eng ufi d’ weg ist schmal der zum leben fiiret un wenig ist ir die in iinden. Matth. vii.
Wrolffgang Eormschneider.” The poem, in the collected edition, is dated “ Anno Salutis
mcccccxxix Am Tag Martini.”
The woodcut is by an imitator of Beham, who also designed the illustration to
“ Nachred das grewlich Laster.” See Bepert. f. Kunstw. xxv, 470.
