32. ST EUSTACE
B.57 O.35 H.727 R. 127 M.29 K.32 F.(28) Bw.30 Engraving
Signature : monogram on a sheet of paper in centre at foot of plate.
There is an interval of 2 mm. between work and platemark at foot of plate only.
Date: about 1501.
Watermarks : ‘ bull’s head ’ (Ha.i) rarely, ‘ high crown ’ (Ha.4) frequently, ‘ jug ’
(Ha.io).
Drawing: study (in reverse) at Windsor for the greyhound nearest to St. Eustace
(L.388).
This engraving is often called “ St. Hubert.” The same incident occurs in the legends
of both saints, but St. Eustace was venerated in Germany, St. Hubert rather in the
Netherlands and in France. Diirer himself repeatedly calls the engraving “ St.
Eustace ” in his journal (L,u.F., 120, 121, 127, 137, 140).
