Vienna Diam. 33
105. ST. JEROME
B.62 O.38 H.782 li.app.'i M. (doubtful) 105 K. (doubtful) 106 F.— Bw.— Engraving
IMPRESSIONS : Amsterdam, Bremen, Dresden (Friedr. Aug. II), Paris, Vienna.
Sufficiently near to Diirer for the attribution to him to be worthy of consideration,
but the technique is rough, and the effect black and heavy when compared with the
one certain work of Diirer on so small a scale, the “ Degenknopf,” B.23. The engrav-
ing is often described as a niello, but I see no reason for this.
The figure resembles rather closely that on the woodcut of St. Jerome, P.188, perhaps
designed by Diirer himself, which was used in books printed by Holzel at Nuremberg
from 1511 onwards. I suspect that the engraver used this woodcut in designing his
plate.
