great American teacher of art, used to say: — ‘one must be
able to walk in and out of a picture without bumping one’s
nose.’ And this is as true of modern art as it was true of
the art of the past.

Bruce has continued his research, and has developed his
abstract movements to a synthetic reality, which is monu-
mental in its expression. It is interesting to note that Carra,
one of the Italian Futurists, has done the same, though his
works represent less of the monumental. This is another
