II. DRAWINGS.

The abbreviation “ L,” used in this section, refers to F. Lippniann’s
publication of Durer’s drawings, vols. I-IV (1883-1896), continued under
the editorship of J. Meder, vol. V (1905), and F. Winkler, vol. VI (1927).
A seventh volume, containing drawings hitherto unpublished in this
series, of later date than 1505, is to appear this year.
168. Anonymous. Portrait of Dubeb as a Boy. Copy of L. 448.
Copy, dated Feb. 4th, 1576, of Durer’s silver-point portrait of himself,
dated 1484, in the Albertina, Vienna.
309 x 196. Collection : Sloane (5218-1).
169. A Lady holding a Hawk on Her Wrist. L. 208.
Black chalk, on red paper. 220 X 184. Collection : Sloane (5218-90).
The unknown author of the inscription states that Diirer made this draw-
ing for him in the presence of the late Cunrat Lomayer before he went
into the house of Wolgemut the painter (i.e. before Nov. 30th, 1486).
170. Christ (or a Prophet ?), after Schongauer. L. 595.
Pen and black ink. 206 x 122. Collections : Lawrence, Woodburn.
1854-6-28-23.
At the top Diirer has written at a later date and in pale ink : “ Das hat
hubsch Martin gemacht im 1469 jar.” This was formerly interpreted as
an attribution of the drawing to Schongauer (S. Colvin in Prussian
Jahrbuch, VI, 1885, p. 74). It is now taken to mean that the drawing is
a copy by Diirer himself after some work of Schongauer, dated 1469
(Lehrs, Friedlander, Rosenberg, Winkler).
171. The Presentation of Christ in the Temple. L. 598.
Pen and Indian ink and wash. 297 X 195. Collection: Sloane (5218-94).
Another person has written at the foot : “ Albrecht Durer hatt das stuck
gemach in seinen ledigen Wandfer] jar[en] ” (A.D. did this on his travels
before his marriage).
The unfinished drawing is a copy of a composition of the school
of Schongauer, which exists in several versions (drawing in the Albertina,
etc.). The attribution to Diirer, in spite of the old authentication that
the drawing bears, was long unjustly doubted ; in modern times it was
first vindicated by Seidlitz (Repertorium, VI, 204).
172. Knights Jousting. L. 593.
Signed with early monogram and cross, and dated 1489.
Pen and ink. 198 X 311. Collections : Andreossi, Lawrence, Ginsburg.
On the back is a second drawing (L. 594) for the head of the knight who
is being thrown from his horse.
Presented by the Diirer Society. 1915-8-23-1.
