237. Design for the Scabbard of a Sword. Unpublished.
The ornament consists of two dolphins; a horned skull; a pair of storks
grasped by a kind of sphinx ; a vase held by two winged boys ; an owl;
two birds with their necks entwined ; a jewel, and a triple human mask.
Pen and ink, slightly tinted with yellow ; the upper part of the background
shaded horizontally, the lower part blackened. 428 x 83. Collection :
Sloane (5218-73).
This drawing, which bears Dtirer’s monogram (probably genuine), has not
yet been published or described.

239. Christ Bearing His Cross (a frieze). Unpublished.
Pen and ink. Signed. 42 x 132. Collection: Sloane (5218-144).
This drawing, of similar character to the three which follow, but in brown
instead of black ink, was not published by Lippmann.

Pen and ink, tinted with water-colour. Signed and dated. 203 X 174.
Collection : Sloane (5218-82).
A similar column appears in a woodcut dated 1525 in “ Underweysung der
Messung ” (J 3 v. in 1538 edition).
245. (a) A Pelican (?). Pen and ink on vellum. 56 X 45. Sloane (5218-143).
(b) Study of Bocks and Trees. Penandink. 60 X 40. Sloane (5218-162).
(c) Study of Leg Armour. Silver-point, retouched with the pen and
heightened with white, on grey prepared ground. 98 x 49. Sloane (5218-95).
(d) Head of aMan, Eore-Shortenbd, Looking Upward (much damaged).
Signed. Silver-point on pale lavender ground. 90 X 53. Sloane
(5218-8). Diirer Society, XII, 18.
(e) Two Sheep, a Pig, and an Ox. Pen and ink. 53 x 105. Sloane
(5218-156).
This agrees rather closely with the right half of the woodcut in “ Under-
weysung der Messung,” 1538, Sig. J2.; and might be regarded as a copy
from it, but for the pentimenti in the horns of the ox, which are hard to
account for, if it be a copy.
Of these small drawings, of various dates, mounted together for convenience,
only (d) is published, and only (c) and (e) can be regarded as doubtful,
(a) is perhaps of the same date as the small pen-and-ink drawings, on vellum,
L. 277-279 (nos. 260-262).
