281. Portrait of a Mau Unknown. 1523. L. 292.
Silver-point. 151 x 105. Collection : Sloane (5218-22).
282. Portrait of Frederick II, Elector Palatine. 1523. L. 293.
Silver-point. Signed and dated. 165x 108. Collection : Sloane (5218-20).
283. Study of a Nude Man. 1526.
Pen and ink, the background tinted green. Signed and dated. 448 X 246.
Collection : Sloane (5218-186).
See A. Weixlgartner, “ Diirer und die Gliederpuppe ” (Beitrage zur Kunst-
geschichte, Franz WickhoS gewidmet, Wien, 1903), p. 81. The head of
this drawing is reproduced on p. 82.
284. Veronica, Wife of Hieronymus Andrea. 1525. L. 294.
Charcoal (re-touched). Signed and dated. 424 X 281. Collection : Sloane
(5218-50).
Veronica was the wife of Hieronymus Andrea, the most famous wood
engraver of Nuremberg at this time. An inscription by another hand
on the back of the drawing names her “ Fronica anderein Jeronimus
Furmschneiderss Haussfraw.”
285. Design for an Egg-shaped Cup. 1526.
Pen and Indian ink, tinted with yellow. 198 X 145. Collection : Sloane
(5218-81).
Diirer Society, XII, 24. It is there suggested that the drawing may be
a copy, perhaps an unnecessary scruple. For the style and colouring
compare the finer drawing of 1526, L. 588, in the Albertina. Though the
cup is conveniently described as “ egg-shaped ” it is suggested by some
vegetable growth of the turnip or swede tribe.
286. Portrait of Ulrich Starck. 1527. L. 296.
Black chalk. Signed and dated. 410 X 296. Collection: Sloane (5218-51).
See Burlington Magazine, VII, 157. The portrait of Ulrich Starck, a
Nuremberg patrician (1484-1549) was identified by Dr. A. Hagelstange
in 1905 by the aid of a medal of the same year, which must have been
made from this drawing, perhaps by Ludwig Krug.
287. Study of a Nude Man, in Profile to the left. 1526.
Pen and Indian ink, the background tinted green. Signed and dated.
445 x 242. Collection : Sloane (5218—185).
A companion to no. 283. On the back is a proportion scheme.
288. Portrait of Margaret of Brandenburg-Ansbach. 1525.
Black chalk on green prepared ground. 420 X 315. Collections : Lawrence,
Coningham. 1903-7-17-1.
See Burlington Magazine, II, 286, and Diirer Society, VI, 13.
The Hohenzollern Princess, Margaret, daughter of the Margrave Friedrich
of Brandenburg-Ansbach and Bayreuth, was born in 1483 and died,
unmarried, in 1532. British Museum postcards, LXXX. 15.
289. Proportion Study of a Man, seen from the front. Unpublished.
Pen and brown ink. 218 X 114. Collection: Lawrence. 1846-6-13-8.
The verso of the sheet is shown : the faint lines surrounding the figure
are not Indian ink, but the stronger lines of shading on the front, showing
through the thin paper. On the front of the sheet no proportion scheme
is drawn.
