325. Hans Baldung, called Gbien. (1476 7-1545). Beabded Head or an
Old Man.
Pen and ink, heightened with white and pink, on brown prepared paper.
Above in centre the date 1518 (original) and a Durer monogram added by

The attribution to Baldung of this drawing, which until recently was placed
among the doubtful works of Durer, is not altogether certain. It is
possibly by an imitator. It most nearly resembles an unpublished draw-
ing in the Koenigs Collection, Haarlem, which is signed and dated 1519.
One of Baldung’s earliest drawings, at Basel (Terey 13), has similar height-
ening in white and pink.

Terey 195. Date about 1520. There is a similar design for a glass panel,
in the Frankfort Print-room, with standing figures of the B.V.M. and St-
Barbara (Repr. in K. T. Parker, “ Alsatian Drawings of the XV and XVI
century,” 1928, pl. 38).

pared paper. Dated 1544 below to r. Collection : Savigny.

Repr. in K. T. Parker, “ Alsatian Drawings of the XV and XVI century,”
1928, pl. 50. This is a study, carried out in the year before Baldung’s
death, for one of the rare book-plates with the artist’s own coat-of-arms,
of which there is a unique impression in the Basle Print-room. The family
of Baldung adopted as its arms the unicorn appearing in the coat of
Schwabiseh-Gmund, whence it hailed.

Holy Family.
Pen and ink, heightened with Chinese white, on olive-green prepared paper.
Signed with the monogram on the tree-trunk and dated 1514 to 1. in centre
(above the tower). 224 x 162. 1876-12-9-618.
