Baoris are Hindus of Rajput stock and appear to have come
originally from Gujrat. They are now to be found nearly all over
India. They are known by a large variety of names which had been
given them by the inhabitants of the territories they have settled
in so that it is not uncommon to find colonies of the same tribe in
close proximity going under entirely different names. They all
have a common origin, belong to the same tribe, speak the same lan-
guage—a corrupt form of Gujrati,—inter-marry, and on occasions
associate for criminal purposes. The name they know themselves
by is " Baori ".
The following is the list of names by which they are known in
the parts of the country where they reside
(!) Baori.—Districts Muzaffarnagar, Gorakhpur (United
Provinces) Bahawalpur State, Sind and Punjab.
(2) Baoria.—-Mewar (Udaipur).
(3) Badak.—Many parts of Upper India, most of Central
India States and Oudh.
(4) Moghiya.—Rajputana and Central India
(5) Bagri.—Malwa and Rajputana.
(6) Bagora.—Central India States.
(7) Marwari.—North-Western OudhTarai,Marwar, Jodhpur,
Bikaner and Baroda.
(8) Malpura—Ajmer.
(9) Delhiwal.—Upper Doab and districts round about
Delhi.
(10) Takankar.—Berar, Khandesh, Deccan and Nizam's
Dominion.
(11) Pardhi—(including Phas Pardhi, Gaon Pardhi, Langoti
Pardhi, Chita Pardhi, Pardhi, Malwi and Ban-
dukawala Pardhi)—Berar, Khandesh, Deccan, Nizam's
Dominion, Gwalior, Indore, Dhar and Dewas States.
(12) Habura or Karwal.—Malwa, Muradabad, Mathura,
Aligarh, Mainpuri, Eta and Unao.
(13) Seearkhowa.—Eastern Oudh Forest and Tarai.
(14) Kerolia.—Mangoli (Gwalior), Raisen (Bhopal) and Cen-
tral India States.
(15) Makwari, Barriari and Khoili.—West of Delhi in Marwar.
(16) Madana.—Alwar State.
(17) Kichak.—North Bengal.
(18) Morgia.—Jodhpur State.
(19) Thori.—Banswara (Rajputana.)
(20) Mewara, Kherara and Godwara.—Central India States.
Those who come periodically down to the Central Provinces
to commit crime are chiefly Baoris from Muzaffarnagar district.
