single dramatic work in Bengali that can be stykd a
first-rate performance; while of the'scores of plays pub-
lished every month, nay, almost every week, we could
not name even half a dozen second-rate ones; The only
dramatist of note that Bengal has produced was the late
Babu Dim Bandhu Mitra. Even his worka are wanting in
sterling merit, and consist mostly of stale witticisms and
humorous, stories, and ludicrous representations of the
^ices of the day, which have made him very popular with
the generality of the Bengali reading public, whose edu-
cation and tastes are by no means of a very high order.
We very much doubt if his works will be remembered
fifty years hence; while we may safely assert that of the
heaps of dramas published shvje his death there is not
one which has not been, or will not be, quite forgotten
within five years from the date of its publication.

The Kulin Kula Sarvaswa Ndtak written by Ram
Narayan Tarkaratna iu 1851 A. D., may be considered
as the first original dramatic work in the language. The
work is full of witty passages and expatiates on the
evils of the system ^of kulinism which still prevails in
Bengal to some extent. Ram Narayan has written two
other original plays, JVaba Ndtak and Rukmini Harare
Ndtak. His fame, however, has been completely eclipsed
by that of Diria Bandhu Mitra.

district of Nuddea, in 1829 A. D., and served Go-

Department. He died in 1873. Between 1860 and 1873
he wrote four dramas (ft*$*f«i, -ift^T ^©^fV^t, ^ftofa^t,
