THE PERIOD OF EUROPEAN INFLUENCE.

205

, "As a tree
Orf fire by lightning ; with ethereal flame „
Kindled she was and blasted.'''

Heera, a female servant of Nogendra, is powerfully

drawn. Her passions are fierce in their strength, and

her unprincipled character and endless wiles and schemes

are ever 'busy to bring them satisfaction. 9 And yet there

is some nableness in the character, for love is ennobling

under all' circumstances. The basest metal sparkles in

the sun.

Nogendra, except in the days of his madness is an
estimable character, generous and charitable, of an
open heart and refined feeling. His brother Debendra is
a low drunkard and a dissipated wretch without a drop
of nobility in his heart. Boi-h character^ are life-like
and well drawn. Shirish Babu, the husband of Kamal-
mani, is a decent sort of an office-going Baboo, and ex-
cessively fond of his amiable wife.

Thus we have attempted to give our readers an idea
of the literature of the present century,—the Period of
European Influence. Many of the writers of this period
are yet living and producing new works every year; so that
the completest account of the present period would be
incomplete ten years hence. We have therefore for^
saken our old plan of devoting a chapter to each writer
and noticing all his works, and have attempted to present,
within the limits of one chapter, the true character and
significance of the literature and thought of the present
epoch. What we have said however will, we believe,
convince our readers that Bengal is even now undergoing
a great revolution, a revolution in society and religion,
