CAnrAr, however, who added the baleness of hypocrisy
to the ferocity of a tyrant, was determined to punish. the zeal
and honedv avhich he thought dt to commend, and a sew days
afterwards'caused Pz?;^z// to be declared guilty os high trealon,

Hehopedthathissentencewouldhavebeen then reserved, as

afterwards, being disguded at the haughty behaviour os Gen.
PZewz/z^, ^z/gw/Zz/ds favourite, entered into the iervicc of
the Czar, with whom ^z/g*z//Zz/r was in ItriCt alliance, and a
little before GAzzz/cr compelled ^Zz/gz/Zz/r to abdicate the throne
of Pc/z/zzzZ, and his lubjeCts to eleCt Xrz/zzyG/z/r in his dead. The
Czar lent Puzdz/Z, with the title of his ambasador inCz/vcz/y,
to prevail with ^//gz/Zz/r to meet him at Gr<?zZ/zz/, that they
might cooler on the date os their assairs.
This conference took place, and immediately afterwards
the Czar went from GrezZzzp, to quell a rebellion inX/?,-*z;z-;<v.
As loon as the Czar was gone, XTgz//Zz/.r, to the G.rprixe
ofallPz/zvyv, ordered P<i/GzZ, who was then at Dzy/zAz/, to
be leized as a date criminal.
By this injurious and unprecedented aCfion ^/z/gzz/?z/r at once
violated the law of nations, and weakened his ownintered;
for PnsZzz/ was not onlyanambadador, but an ambaisador
from the only power that could afford him prote&ion. The
cause, however, was this: Px/;/w/had diseovered that Xz'gzz-
/Zz/s s miniders were to propose a peace to CAwZsy upon any
terms, and had theresore formed a deiign to be besore band
with him, and procure a separate peace between CAzz/ Aj- and
