parts of the sculptures of the Parthenon which were
invisible to the spectator who stood below, were as
elaborately executed as those which were immediately
in sight. Whether this was done from a religious
feeling, or because the sculptures were submitted to
pubUc examination before they were placed in the
tympanum, may be matter of conjecture.
