advantages which were formerly, supposed

This subject naturally leads to a question
which, I believe, is generally solved rather
from habit and prejudice than reason. Are
we, as Bacon says, “ to sequester ourselves
from the company of our countrymen"
while abroad, or may we be allowed some-
times to associate with them ? The answer
to this question should be drawn from prin-
ciples of general or rather durable utility.
The object of all our travels, studies, and
pursuits is, or ought to be, permanent ad-
vantage. V/e do not, doubtless, travel to
France or to Italy to see Englishmen, but
yet we travel for improvement and for
