Clay pale brown. Ovoid body contracting to small base, small neck, flat lip,
strap handle. Decoration in black glaze with applied red, details in fine incised
lines: on the shoulder a lion, a ram, and a grazing goat; main zone: centaur of
early type with branch in right hand, facing to right toward an advancing bearded
man with staff in right hand, thunderbolt (?) in raised left hand, and sword in
scabbard at his side; behind the latter, a youth with drawn sword running to the
right; before him a standard on which are two seated eagles and beside which
are flying eagles; in both fields are ornaments, point rosettes, crossed lozenges,
Maltese crosses, meander hook squares, single and double spirals reversing, etc.;
at the base, rays; on the lip, concentric zones of ornament: a tongue pattern, a
band of small “pot-hooks,” and a band of short rays; on back of handle, a com-
plex guilloche; broken meander on the edge of handles and of lip.

Clay pale buff. Body ovoid, contracting to very small base, small neck,
wide flat lip, strap handle. Decoration in black glaze slightly lustrous, with ap-
plied red; details in fine incised lines: on the shoulder, a band of palmettes and
stiff lotus buds pointing down, lozenges in the angles of the connecting loops
above; in the main zone, two lions facing on the front, two rams butting on the
back, in the field: point rosettes, chevrons, and ornaments made up of black tri-
angles; below, a band of point rosettes separated by pairs of vertical zigzags;
rays at the bottom; on the lip: concentric bands of ornament, lines, short rays,
red and black tongue pattern; complex guilloche on back of handle.

(bearded) on Pegasus attacking the Chimaera, at the back, two sphinxes sepa-
rated by vertical line flanked by small spirals, in the field, point rosettes, crosses,
pendent spirals (pot-hooks), chevrons, etc., and a lizard; below, a narrow band
of dogs running and a rabbit, then a guilloche; fine rays at the base; on the lip, a
