ORIENTALIZING WARES OF GREEK MAINLAND

are two grotesque panthers with short legs, elongated necks and small facing
heads, standing opposite each other; in front and on the back, two water-birds
(or quails?), one above the other; incised rosettes in the field; radial bars on top
of lip, dots on edge of lip and on back of handle.

Purchased, 1891.
Clay pale dull buff. Pear-shaped body, small neck, broad flat lip, small
handle. Decoration in lustrous black glaze and applied red: on the front of
body, a woman-headed bird (siren) wearing a polos, raised incurved wings; on
the back a water-bird, incised rosettes in field; radial bars on the bottom and on
the lip, dots on edge of lip.

Clay pale gray-buff. Pear-shaped body, small neck, broad flat lip, small per-
forated handle. Decoration in lustrous black glaze with applied red: short
radial bars from the neck; two sphinxes seated opposite each other wearing
the polos, raised incurved wings, a serpent erect between them; in the field
point rosettes and on the back incised rosettes; radial bars on the bottom and
on the lip, dots on the edge of lip.

Said to be from Rhodes. Purchased, 1891.
Clay pale gray-buff. Pear-shaped body, small neck, wide flat lip, small per-
forated handle. Decoration in lustrous black glaze and dark red: at the neck,
short black and red radial bars; on the front of body, two cocks with elongated
necks facing each other, between them a serpent erect; in the field, small four-
parted rosettes on front, large incised rosettes on back; circle of dots around
bottom, radial red and black bars on the lip, dots on edge of lip.

Clay very pale red. Pear-shaped body, thick walls. Decoration in slightly
lustrous black gaze and applied red: an “Oriental Artemis” standing, head to
right, raised incurved wings, holding in each hand the neck of a swan with raised
wings; four incised rosettes in field; open rosette on bottom.
