The manuscript of the following pages was prepared as
a register of the incidents connected with the acquisition
of the Xanthian marhles by the British Museum ; and,
had not circumstances induced its publication, would
have been deposited among the records in that insti-
tution.

Finding that vague rumours, imperfect accounts and
misrepresentations were appearing in the public prints,
I have thought fit, notwithstanding the necessarily ego-
tistical character of the narrative, to give it publicity in
its original form, and therefore preface the account with
this apology.
