tbese temples, wbicb are all built nearly on tlie sarne plan. They
consist in tbe first place of a great tower or vimcma, in tbe centre of
wbicb, as in tliose of soutbern India, is the cell, a cubical apartment
containing tbe image. No ligbt is admitted to tbis except by the door,
and tbis is, in all great temples at least, preceded by a square porcb
or mantapa, witb a door on eacb face ; tbree opening towards tbe court,
one to tbe cell. Other porcbes sometimes precede tbis one, but tbey
are always detacbed buildings, or, if connected, it is only in a slight or
temporary manner.

It will be observed tbat the vimanct is a very differently forrned
building from those we. bave been describing as existing in tbe south.
