POINTED ArCHITECTURE IN ITALY.
The history of the pointed style in Italy is even less instmctive than
that of the saine art in Gerraany. Indeed, if regarded only in an
artistic point of view, it is perhaps the least interesting chapter in the
liistory of the architectnre of the middle ages. Its importance con-
sists in the evidence, imprinted on the bnildings of the conntry, of
the extent to whicli the influence of the Korthem races with their
feudal system was felt liere, of the duration of that influence, and the
degree in which it was modified by the Italian element which lay
beneath. AIl this can be read at a glance in the architecture of the
age, and nowhere is it depicted with tlie same clearness and fixed so
unalterably and indelibly as it is in Italy.
To the mere student of arcliitecture, too, it is interesting to trace
at what points it failed to equal the contemporary styles on tliis side
of tlie Alps, and from what causes, thus revealing to us the secrets of
the success of the French architects, which, without tliis test, it
might be difficult to detect. In Italy we find buildings scarcely sur-
passed in size by any otliers in Europe. The best possible construc-
tion is combined with the''most beautiful material. The vaulted roofs
