Book YIII.
Its western cloorway, Avliicli rernams intact (woodcut Xo. 682), is a
fair specimen of the rich mode of decoration so prevalent in that
age. It nmst be considered rather as a Continental than as an English
design. Ifad it been executed by native artists, we should not entirely
niiss the billet moulding which was so favourite a mode of decoration
with all the nations of the Xorth.
The choir and the crypt below it were rebuilt in the first years of
the 13th century, and dedicated 1227. The latter (woodcut Xo. 683)
is one of the best specimens of its class to bo found in England, as after
this date the subterranean churches became less important than in the
previous centuries. Xo new crypts were built after this time, though
Ave find the older retained, and sometimes restored, down to a much
later period.
The cathedral at Chicbester was commenced immediately after the
removal of the see from Sclsea in 1082, and the nave, as we now sce it,
Eochester Catkedral, West Doorway.
