mises of obedience and devotion were offered, which,
I must say, were most loyally carried out.

First You will remember that on my first journey up

Cataract. ... . .

the Nile with His Eoyal Highness the Prince of Wales,
we did not ascend beyond Luxor. Many temples and
other objects of interest are to be found on the Nile
above this point, and to a few of these I will now direct
your attention.

At the foot of the First Cataract is the town of
Assouan, near which are several ancient granite
quarries, which supplied the covering of the third
Pyramid by Mycerinus, and the greater part of the
granite monuments and works of Upper and Lower
Egypt. In all the quarries are numerous marks left
by metal tools and grooves for wood wedges. In one
quarry between Philas and Assouan is an obelisk cut
out of the solid rock; fortunately for our curiosity the
work had been interrupted, and the unreleased
monolith remains in situ.

The temple of Phike is near the head of the rapid
or cataract, and the island of Elephantine and the town
of Assouan near the bottom. The word 'cataract' is
rather misleading and disappointing, as it implies a
vertical fall, whereas we have here a rocky rapid, of
unique and picturesque beauty, with dark polished
granite rocks and islands, amidst rushing and foaming
waters.
