Chaloner Smith notes that he has twice met the portrait
of Mrs. J. R. Smith (No. 324) with Miss Johnston’s name
upon it in pencil ; and he raises the question of the iden-
tity of this lady with “ Smith’s second wife.” But J. R.
Smith had only one wife, and her maiden name was
Hannah Croome. The print of Miss Johnston is un-
known to me.

Born in 1752, Mr. James King served with distinction in
the war with America, obtaining his captaincy, 21st March 1782,
in the 105th Regiment, from which he retired in September
1783. His health having suffered in the campaign, he took up
his residence at Bath, where he became M.C. at the Lower
