of their strong feeling for reality they enveloped their figures in
light and air, observed the accurate values of each object, and
depicted individual character with great penetration. At the
same time they wove exquisite color harmonies, often those
subtle harmonies of grays, blacks, and silver that have had so
strong an influence on painting ever since.
