KRABATA. MYCEN^. 35

From this tumulus the situation of the great gate of the citadel will
be perceived. When opposite to it, on examining the descent of the
hill to the left, another circular edifice, like the treasury, may be disco-
vered ; but the roof has fallen in as far as the great stone above the
gate, leaving a large circular hollow. The portal is entire, and is
about eight feet wide and 14 feet deep. One of the stones in the side
wall is of that length. The architrave is about 10 feet long.

The walls of the citadel are very curious, being evidently of the
same date with those of Tirynthus. Mycenae, in the tragedy of Her-
cules Furens, is called KTKAnnEiAN noAiN; also KTKAnnriN baopa. In
Electra ktkaxiiieia otpania teixh. Again iioaisma nE?iE£ix
KTKAXinnN noNON XEPXiN. Iphigenia in Aulis ktkaxuiiin oymeaas.
Ibid. Hesychius explains ©tmeah by iepon eaa$os. Mycenae is
stated by Homer well built. Iliad, B. 2. etktimenon riTOAiE0PON.
This might refer to the walls as well as the houses.

Medeon, iEpy, Iaolkos, Cleonae, Athens, and Thebes, have the
same epithet, three of which at least were fortified before the Trojan
war. Thebes particularly, Odyssey, B. 2. /. 26*3. and Iliad, B. 4. 378.
Tiryns and Pheia, Iliad 7- 135. alone on the continent are called
well walled by Homer, yet etktimenon iitoaie0PON is by Hesiod ap-
plied to that city. Shield of Hercules. Strabo, speaking of Cleonae,
applies Homer's epithet to the walls; and Apollodorus, Book 2. says
that Perseus fortified Tiryns, Mideia, and Mycenae. The gate of the
lions is thus mentioned by Pausanias. " Some parts of the circuit of
the wall of Mycenae remain, as well as a gate, over which are lions.
