Glass, as used in windows for the
transmission of light, was almost unknown
at Pompeii: indeed, 200 years later, we find
Vopiscus numbering this luxury amongst
the extravagancies of the merchant Fir-
mus, whose riches enabled him for some
time to contest the sovereignty of Egypt
with the troops of Aurelian.
