POMPEIANA. 13

the ninth year of the reign of the emperor
Nero», about sixteen years previous to the
eruption; and the unfinished state of the
repairs in many of the buildings attests
the fact.

We are led by one of the sepulchral
inscriptions to look for the discovery of a
temple of Ceres, as the learned seemed
disposed to refer that of the Grecian doric
order near the theatre to the worship of
Neptune.

It appears to have been sometimes the
practice during the first excavations at
Pompeii, to throw into that relinquished
the materials drawn from the next ex-
plored, after the paintings, mosaic pave-
ments, and other articles considered valu-
able, had been removed; but a contrary
system was subsequently adopted, and is
now acted upon.
