ashes, poured with the force and impetus
of mighty torrents, overwhelming the
country to the tops of the trees, and every
where converting the verdure of nature
into the dreary aridity of the desert.

mountain uttered terrifying sounds, to the
great alarm of the people; but no erup-
tion took place3.

miles round was shaken by earthquake,
