PLATE XXV.

View in the court of a house near the foregoing: the
space within the columns was open; around is
a gutter for conveying away the water which fell
from the roof. At the farther end is seen a
niche: the wall is painted, and this part was,
probably, roofed. The door to the right of the
niche is to the room where were found the sur-
gical instruments whence the house obtained its
name. To the left, but out of the picture, was
the entrance through the first court. There was
also a communication with a parallel street, to the
right of the view, but not seen. The unfluted
portions of the columns are painted blue: the dwarf
walls between red. The tiles upon the walls are
modern.

PLATE XXVI.

Outlines of two paintings upon a wall. They are
surrounded by ornaments from various quarters:
that in the centre had a mirror.

They are principally from the house of the Vestals.
