POMPEIANA. 189

The columns of the inner peristyle .are seen. Upon
the side of the entrance is inscribed,

RNSNtaty

Pansam sedem Paratus rogat ut faveat.

If the inscription is to be thus read, we may presume Pansa to have been
the dominus, and Paratus the keeper of the shop to the right of the door.
Or was Paratus the owner of the whole insula, and Pansa his patron at
Rome?

PLATE XXXVI.

Peristyle, or inner court of the house of Pansa^
The columns were originally formed in lava, of
the Ionic order: their flutings had subsequently
been changed to Doric by means of plaster, and
painted. The puteal is here seen, adjoining the
nearest column.
