mentioned page 200; but they are very ill exe-
cuted. Beyond the Janus is a piece of brick-
work, with flat arches to receive stucco work. It is
the beginning of the street leading to the theatre,
and part of the wall of the crypto portico sur-
rounding a space excavated since this view was
made.

The distant mountain is Lactarius. The small co-
lumns on the right are supposed to have sup-
