though it cannot enter into competition witli the real
bronze.

True bronze, doubtlessly the noblest alloy of copper,
has gained considerable credit in the course of the last
decennaries, especially in the region of high art. The
an of bronze-casting, which has been in existence for
thousands of years, strongly engaged itself in the exe-
cution of numerous monumental works — monuments
of victory, of warriors and of emperors etc. — in the
Workshops of Munich, Berlin, Stuttgart, Nuremberg, the
Hartz etc. In miniature art it has experienced frequent
application of a highly artistic character in honorary
presents, as well as for illuminating and heating pur-
poses, in turns with its twin-sister, the brass, Munich

in Saxony (illustr. 9) and last not lcast Berlin. The
overproduetion of the dozen-articles among the Berlin
cuivre-poli produets has unfortunately brought discredit
upon the artistic industrial value ot individual Performances
of a better quality, though an improvement in that respect
has been observed of late. Products of chased sheet-brass
have at times turned up almost everywhere where chased-
copper work is eultivated. — Tin-foundery with artistic
elaboration has scarcely extended its limits beyond Munich
and a few other towns of Bavaria, whilst etching on tin
as amateurs' art has gained a greater extension. — Zinc-
industry has progressed in a strikingly rapid manner at
the side of the small bronzes, for which it affords a
cheäper Substitute, particularly in the illuminating line;
but for a developement of real artistic-industrial activity
there remained but little opportunity.

As regards cast-iron, however high a degree of per-
loading ...
