face of the sepulcher and above the bench. The
funerary monument was built above the burial
chamber, while the burial shaft was found to its
west.

The shaft (0.55 by 0.85 m, 1.00 m deep) was
cased with bricks. The opening to the burial
chamber was in the eastern side and measured
0.50 by 0.80 m; it was blocked with a stone slab
measuring 0.82 by 0.55 m. From the top the shaft
was closed with a sandstone slab (1.15 by 1.20 m)
fitted into a ledge cut in the top edges of the shaft.

The burial chamber was built of mud brick
and barrel-vaulted. Inside, it measured 2.10 m in
length, 0.85 m in width and 1.10 m in height; it
had a mud plaster coating all around.

The bishop’s skeleton was found lying
extended on the back with arms alongside the
body and head turned to the west (Dzierzykraj-
Rogalski 1985: 169-192). A clay oil lamp stood
by his head (field reg. no. F. 129/63-64. Adams
P.19, N.IV; (Kolodziejczyk 1982: 183, Fig. 11).

9.5. Tomb in the southern sacristy

A tomb was built by the north wall of the room,
most probably in the last phase of the operation
of the cathedral [Fig. 142]. In the course of
excavation worlc, the burial chamber was opened
and was found not to have a shaft. The chamber
had been built on a deposit of sand lying in the
room. It was a rectangular structure measuring
