Teodor AXENTOWICZ

Bom in Brashov in Romania in 1859 — Died in Cracow in 1938
He carried out his studies at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts (1879-1882) under Gabriel Hackl,
Alexander Wagner and Gyula Benczur, continuing in Paris in the study of Auguste Carolus-
Duran. In 1891 he won a membership of the Societe National des Beaux-Arts (for his “Portrait of
Wiktor Oslawski’: — item 17). He made several artistic trips to London and Rome in tire years
1890-1899. In 1895 he was appointed a professor of the School, later Academy of Fine Arts in
Cracow, where he settled for good. He was one of the founders of the Society of Polish Artists
“Sztuka” (“Art”), a member of the Viennese Secession, a member of honour of the Society for the
Encouragement of Fine Arts “Zach^ta” in Warsaw. In 1910 he was elected rector of the Cracow
Academy of Fine Arts.
He painted predominantly portraits and genre-scenes — usually from the life of the Hutsul
highlanders (from the Eastern Carpathians). He often used pastels and water-colours; he also
produced prints.
