Leona (Leonia) BIERKOWSKA BM
Bom in Cracow in 1855 — Died in Cracow in 1925
She studied painting initially under Hipolit Lipinski at the Adrian Baraniecki Higher Courses for
Women in Cracow. In the years 1875-1879 she gave there lessons of drawing and
ornamentation. In the 1880s she was a student of Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre at the
Academie Julian in Paris. She returned to Cracow in 1886. She exhibited her works at the Cracow
Society of Friends of the Fine Arts from 1877 to 1896, collaborating as well with the Artistic Salon
of Aleksander Krywult in Warsaw. In 1903 she became the vice-chairman of the Circle of Polish
Ladies Artists in Cracow.
She occupied herself mainly with genre painting and executed also portrait studies. Around 1900
she took up sculpture — she sculpted small polychromed wooden figures which represented folk
types in regional costumes shown in a realistic way.
