Another interesting inscription, in which many of the words
are linked together, may still be seen in the public gardens at
Setif. It is a dedication by the veterans residing at Sitifis to
the family of Valerian, and bears the names of his son Gallienus,
and of his two grandsons Valerianus and Saloninus. This
inscription has attracted the attention of several epigraphists,
and has been deciphered by Wilmanns, Berbrugger, Creully, and
others:1

"veteranorum Sitifensiuui, decreto decurionum, pecunia publica.
Of still greater interest is the inscription on a broken milliary
c°lumn found near Khenschela (the ancient Mascula), being a
dedication by its citizens to the three Emperors, father, son, and
£randson, coupling with their names Cornelia Salonina, the
^lustrious wife of Gallienus :2

1nunicipii Masculatani. It is gratifying to find the name of this
eXcellent princess, who was distinguished for her virtues, her
tender regard for the welfare of the people, and her liberal
Patronage of the arts of peace, recorded on a pedestal in a
remote corner of the proconsular province of Africa, not far
fr°m the city of Tunis. This stone was unearthed about forty
