INTRODUCTION.
I have often forgotten, My imperfect Italian, too,
does not make me sure that my questions were
always rightly understood, by those most able and
most willing to give instruction. I am now far
from the sources of information and the scenes I
have described, but I shall be grateful to any one
who will add to these recollections, or correct them ;
and should my humble writing be the means of
bringing forth some more worthy work upon the
subject, I shall be thankful, for the sake of science
and history in general, that ever I was led to make
the attempt.
