was to impart an air of magnitude to the church, but such expedients should be
eschewed : a sounder rule is, that outside aspect and scale should correspond
with internal dimensions.

The upper part of the west front is tinged with a deeper shade of red than
the lower, the bricks having obviously been coloured red either with varnish
or with oil pigment. Be it which it may, it remains in good preservation, and
has resisted that oxidation which mostly dyes old brick of a dark grey hue.
The story goes, though I vouch not for its authenticity, that this colour was
prepared from the blood of oxen, which, sinking into the brick, stopped up the
pores with a kind of enamel that kept out damp and defied oxidation.
