equally have been built of brick ; and the cost would then scarcely have been
less than was actually incurred to combine four square walls with varied cor-
nices and sundry compartments, thus investing the entire campanile with an
architectural character. To unite simplicity with thrift is a far more difficult
task than might be imagined, as architects know to their cost; and this
campanile is a fair specimen of such a combination.
