Upon Hamet, whole heart involuntarily anil-
veered to the voice of Almeida , thele words had
irredltible and inlsantaneous force ; but recollec-
ting , in a moment , whole form he bore , and
to whom they were addrelled , they iiruck him
with new altonishment, and increasedthe torments
of his mind, Supposing what he at frit feared
had happened, and that Almoran had leduced her
as Hamet ; he could not account for her now ad-
dreding him, as Almoran , with words of favour
and compliance : he , therefore , renewed his en-
quiries concerning himlelf , with apprehensions of
a disferent kind. She , who was dill selicitous
to put an end to the enquiry, as well for the sake
of Hamet , as to prevent her own embarradinent,
replied with a dgh, 'Let not thv peace be inter-
rupted by one thought of Hamet ; for of Hamet
'Almeida shall think no more.' Hamet , who,
though he had fortified himlelf againd whatever
might have happened to her person , could not
hear the alienation of her mind , cried out, with
looks of didraclion and a voice scarcely human ,
'Not think of Hamet!' Almeida , whole adonish-
ment was every moment increaling , replied , with
a tender and intereding enquiry, 'Is Almoran then
' offended , that Almeida should think of Hamet
'110 more?' Hamet , being thus addreded by the
name of his brother , again recollecled his litua-
tion ; and now fird conceived the idea , that the
alteration os Almeida's sentiments with respect to
himlelf, might be theettees of some violence offer-
ed her bv Almoran in his likenels; he, therefore,
recurred to his fil'd purpole, and determined, by
a direcl enquiry, to diseover, whether die had ieen
him under that appearance. This enquiry he ur-
