they grew ; but if they once deviated at the Call
of Appetite, their Afature sbon became gigantic,
and their Arength was Arch, that Education poin-
ted out to her tribe many that were led in Chains
by them, whom Are could never more rescue from
their Aavery. She pointed them out , but with
little effedf ; for her pupils appeared confident of
their own superiority to the ArongeA Habit , and
dome deemed in lecret to regret that they were hin-
dered from following the triumph of Appetite.
It was the peculiar artifice of Habit not to
duffer her power to be felt firA. Thole whom slag
led , Ate had the address of appearing only to at-
tend , but was continually doubling her Chains
upon her Companies , which were so Render in
themselves , and so Alentlv faAened , that while
the attention was engaged by other objecls, they
were not easily perceived. Each link grew tighter
as it had been longer worn , and when by conti-
nual additions they became so heavy as to be felt,
they were very frequently too Arong to be broken*
When Education had proceeded in this mat^
ner to the part of the mountain where the declivity
began to grow craggy , Ate religned her charge to
two powers of superior alpecf. The meaner of
them appeared capable of prestding in Senates or
governing Nations , and yet watched the Aeps os
the other with themoA anxious attention, and was
visibly confounded and perplexed if ever Ate inhered
her regard to be drawn away. The other seemed
to approve her submislion as pleasing , bnt with
inch a condetcension as plainly shewed that Ate
claimed
