VISION of THEODORE.

3,46
<ed, when a pallion called to one side , and an ap
petite to the other*
Thele Inducers had the greatell luceels upon
the followers of Realon , over whom they scarcely
ever failed to prevail, except when they counterac-
ted one another. They had not the lame triumphs;
over the votaries of Religion ; for though they
were often led aiide for a time, Religion common-
ly recalled them by her Emillary, Considence , be-
fore habit had time to enchain them. But they
that profelled to obey Reason, if once they for-
seok her, leldom returned; for she had no rnellen-
ger to summon them but Pride, who generally be-
trayed her confidence, and employed all her Skill
to lupport Paslion ; and if ever she did her duty,
was found unable to prevail , if Habit had inter-
poled.
1 ioon found that the great danger to the Fol-
lowers of Religion was only from Habit ; every
other power was easily resilled , nor did they find
any disficulty when they inadvertently quitted her,
to hnd her again by the direction of Considence ,
urdels they had given time to Habit to draw her
chain behind them, and bar up the way by which
they had wandered. Ofsame of thole, the con-
dition was jultly to be pitiod, who turned at every
call of Conlcien.ce , and tried , but without effect,
to burl! the chains of Habit : law religion walk-
ing forward at a dillance, law her with reverence,
land longed to join her; but were , whenever they
approached her, with - held by Habit , and lan-
guilhed in lordid bondage , which they could not
eicape , though they Icorned and hated it.
